Sydney is proud to present Love is Sci-Fi an exhibition of new work by New York based artist and writer Justin Chance. References in this exhibition include (but are not limited to): subtext, Ray Bradbury’s 1954 short story, “All Summer in a Day” , The 1999 film, The Matrix by the Wachowski Siblings and love (filial, fraternal, archival, romantic, ecological etc.). This is the artist’s first exhibition in Australia.

Justin Chance (b. 1993 in New York, US) is an artist and writer based in New York. Chance received a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a BA in Visual & Critical Studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2015. Chance’s work has been the subject of solo and two-person exhibitions at the following venues: Tara Downs, New York, US (2023); CFA, Milan, IT, presented by Downs & Ross (2022); Apparatus Projects, Chicago, US (2022); Tuesday, Richmond, US (2021); Smart Objects, Los Angeles, US (2021); Gem en Regalia, New York, US (2021); and Smart Objects, Los Angeles, US (2018). The artist’s work has been presented in numerous group exhibitions including, James Fuentes, New York, US (Upcoming); No Name, Paris, FR (2023); Silke Linder, New York, US (2022); Galerie Anton Janizewski, Berlin, GE (2022); Daniel Faria Gallery, Toronto, CA, (2022); JTT, New York, US (2022); Arsenal Contemporary, New York, US (2022); Chapter NY, New York, US (2022); JTT, New York, US (2022); Thierry Goldberg, New York, US (2021); Downs & Ross, New York, US (2021); Housing, Miami, US (2019); and Institute of Contemporary Art, Baltimore, US (2018). The artist’s work is included in The Lumpkin-Boccuzzi Family Collection.

1 ”All Summer in a Day”, takes place in an elementary school on Venus where it always rains. Every seven years the rain stops and the sun shines for two hours. On a day that the sun is supposed to come out a girl is locked in a closet by the rest of her classmates. They go out and play and the girl misses the sun entirely.
