Moyra Davey at greengrassi

Four [чотири] connects the work of four artists of Ukrainian descent – Paul Celan, Peter Hujar, Clarice Lispector, and Maya Deren. It is a film rooted in a text, performed by its author, Moyra Davey, and spoken in translation by the filmmaker Lyuba Knorozok. The setting for many of the stories in Four [чотири] is Manhattan's Riverside Park, on the Hudson River. In this urban refuge, Davey finds echoes of the themes she is narrating from the lives of her subjects – dance, music, silence, etc.

Tiled in black-and-white grids, these works capture an “analogue world”: a camera shop on Canal Street in New York frequented by Super-8 filmmakers, Camera Store Grid; stacks of disused computer parts stored in an industrial space, Hoboken Grid; newsstands and bundled newsprint, Newsstand Grid; and a historic snowstorm making a mess of paper recycling on the streets of SoHo, Newsprint Grid.
