Beth Letain at Patrick De Brock

Warm Grey

Beth Letain

Patrick De Brock

September 5 - October 5, 2020

Patrick De Brock Gallery is very pleased to announce its first exhibition with the Berlin based, Canadian painter Beth Letain.

The title of the exhibition, Warm Grey,  was birthed from a drawing Beth made two years ago which kept resurfacing. Like the drawing, the suite of five, off-red paintings now hover over the surface of the endless blue horizon of Knokke.

The paintings circle and ruminate on the theme of language, particularly vowels. In language, vowels fill the gap between sharp consonant sounds – creating space and elongating speech. The visual references to these voids can be found in Letain’s works, which make use of spaces between paint and canvas, foreground and background.

The painted gestural marks that make up Letain’s canvases anticipate language. Language and syntax emerge from these marks – limited forms that are rearranged, varied and repeated so as to assemble meaning. They are records that testify to the artist’s presence.
