We are very pleased to announce the sixth solo show by Berlin-based artist Marlon Wobst at SCHWARZ CONTEMPORARY. SPA presents new felt works by Wobst; it is his second exhibition at the gallery presenting works using this unusual material.
Love, playful nudity, circles, water games, physical exercise, and movement in general are the themes that provide the motifs for the show SPA. There are no limits to the formats. Larger than life, a small freeze, flat or with a relief – painting with wool on wool does not prescribe any sizes or formats; it is a technique with endless possibilities.
Thematically, SPA might be seen as a continuation of an earlier exhibition (KONDITION, 2015, SCHWARZ CONTEMPORARY), where the motifs circled largely around the purely human activity of physical exercise. This leads to SPA as a site of relaxation and recreation for body and mind.
Inspired by the spectrum of painterly effects, from gradations, superimpositions of colours, and borders that can be either soft or harsh, Wobst began in 2018 to work with felt as a means of artistic expression. With the durability of a carpet, and the intensive colours and formal vocabulary of a painting, he created for himself an entirely new way of creating pictures.
