Justin Nalley at A.D.

To present any piece of writing on the occasion of Justin Nalley's Confession is to risk the delicate balance of clarity and obfuscation at play here. Over the past months, we've discussed various entry points into this work-the lyric I and the universal self, mark making as a means of recording labor and life, ritual and dependency, cardioid geometry. I've seen the process, and it's something like prayer but not, devotion curling in on itself. It felt private, so I left him there.

Justin Nalley (b. 1987, Detroit, MI) is an artist based in New York. His work has recently been included in group exhibitions at Historic Hampton House (Miami), Eidmann Gallery at Tara Downs (NYC), Turquoise (NYC), Shisanwu (Queens), and Everybody (Tucson). Confession is Nalley's debut solo exhibition in New York. He received an MFA from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University in 2024, a BA in Photography from Columbia College Chicago in
2010, and is a 2025-2027 resident of the Hercules Studio Program (NYC).
